Air Conditioning Basics

The four main components to your air conditioner are:

Condenser: The condenser is the outside metal unit and where the gas from the compressor is condensed into a liquid. The gas entering the condenser is very hot. The temperature is then lowered, so the gas can convert back to a liquid.

Compressor: The compressor is inside the condenser. It circulates the pressurized refrigerant, to concentrate the heat, and changes the low pressure gas to high pressure.

Evaporator: The evaporator is the part of the system inside the home. In simple language, it absorbs the heat from your home.

Expansion Valve: The expansion valve controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.

All of these pieces are connected by a copper tube that handles refrigerant, creating a closed loop. Heat is collected in the evaporator, sent outside to the condenser. The heat is removed, and the cool air is recirculated back into your home.

AC Facts

An Air Conditioner Doesn’t Create Cool Air.
What happens in the AC process is actually the removal of heat from the air. Your AC uses a chemical called refrigerant to remove heat and transfer it outside. The warm air runs through the lines and coils in your unit and goes from liquid to gas and back again. During this process, the refrigerant removes the heat and transfers it elsewhere so that when the air comes out the other side, it is cool.

Your AC Will Remove Humidity.
Lower humidity helps the overall comfort level in your home by making you feel cooler, even if the temperature is the same.

Your Air Filter Needs To Be Checked And Replaced Every Three To Six Months.
(depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations)
A dirty air filter restricts your air flow, which reduces efficiency, costing you money, and over time can put stress on your unit and could cause a costly repair.

Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance.
Your air conditioner needs regular checkups to keep it running in tip-top shape. Having regular annual preventative maintenance will bring your system longer life and fewer breakdowns over all.

SEER
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures air conditioning and heat pump cooling efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency.

“This was Saturday afternoon, August 17. It had been a long day for Stanley. He nonetheless arrived and conducted a very thorough check of the airconditioning system in my twice yearly maintenance agreement. Stanley was very professional, took his time, and checked the entire system. He wrote a summary and went through it to ensure that I understood all of his notes.

My great thanks to Stanley. My thanks to Arlington Hearing and Air Conditioning for always sending your finest technicians over the years.

“From start to finish could not be happier with the experience of working with Arlington Heating & Air Conditioning.
Both my systems needed attention at the same time so was a bit frantic. The folks in the office are friendly and efficient. They scheduled the appointment and offered alternatives if I wanted the work done sooner.
Richard, the technician who came out was wonderful. Diagnosed the problems in minutes and had everything repaired in short order. The cost was amazingly reasonable. So very grateful!”

“Martin was prompt, friendly, knowledgeable and efficient! I am really happy with how this visit went. He serviced my air conditioner and found one problem that will be fixed while it is still under warranty. He was also patient and very tolerant of my overly friendly dog!”

“I highly recommend Arlington Heating and Cooling. I called on a Friday morning with an unexpected repair problem and Jessica worked to get me on the schedule that day. I also want to compliment Jerrell, who was very professional and arrived within the expected time window. He quickly identified and repaired the problem and was able to conduct a spring inspection during the same call. He also took time to explain the repair issue.”

The staff one schedules with is extremely nice and accommodating. Curtis is always so pleasant, and will answer any questions I have, no matter how silly they might be My son has also used Arlington Heating (Curtis), for many years., and is also very pleased with the dependable service they provide. I highly recommend them!”

“Last night, the heating/cooling register in our dining room stopped showing the temperature and the AC wouldn’t come on. I changed the batteries in the device and checked the breaker box, but those didn’t make a difference. I called and left a message with AHAC, expecting I might have to wait all day today for service. Instead, I received a call early this morning telling me the techician would be at my house in an hour-and-a-half. Wow! I was surprised and thrilled. And Richard, the technician, took care of the issue quickly. My greatest thanks to AHAC for the wonderful service!!”
- Ann L.

I’ve hired this company for years now and am very happy with the work they do. Our most recent technician, Curtis D., was really helpful in explaining the details of the system, what he did to maintain it and was generally very patient and positive. When you hire a HVAC firm, first and foremost you want knowledge of the system and a willingness to review what it needs, doesn’t need and how reliable it is. I’ve always gotten that level of knowledge and engagement from Arlington H & AC.
